Every shirt quote mentions GSM, and almost nobody explains it. Here’s the two-minute version that’ll make you sound like you’ve worked in apparel for years.
What GSM actually means
GSM is grams per square metre — literally how much a square metre of the fabric weighs. Higher GSM means denser, heavier, more substantial fabric. Lower GSM means lighter, airier, cheaper. Neither is “better”; they’re built for different jobs.
The weight classes, translated
~150–180gsm — lightweight. Think classic promo tee. Breathable, budget-friendly, prints brightly. Perfect when quantity matters more than longevity: fun runs, festivals, volunteer shirts, giveaways. This is our Everyday tier.
190–210gsm — midweight. The sweet spot for daily wear. Enough body to hang well and survive constant washing, still comfortable through a Melbourne summer. This is what most uniforms and staff shirts should be — it’s our Signature tier and our default recommendation.
220gsm+ — heavyweight. Retail and streetwear territory. Dense, structured fabric with boxy fits; feels like the $60 tee from the store because that’s the same weight class. If you’re selling merch rather than handing out shirts, start here. This is our Premium tier.
How weight changes the print
Heavier fabric gives prints a more stable base and a more premium hand-feel; lighter fabric drapes and moves more. Our DTF process is wash-tested on every tier we stock, so the print outlasts the use-case either way — but the shirt around it needs to match the job.
A quick matching guide
One-day event for 300 people? Everyday, no question — spend the savings on more shirts. Staff uniforms worn four shifts a week? Signature; the durability pays for itself in replacement cycles. Band or brand merch at $50 retail? Premium; your customers can feel the difference in the first three seconds, and those three seconds decide whether they buy the second design.
The mistakes we see
Buying heavyweight for a summer fun run (participants cook), buying lightweight for merch (it feels like a fundraiser shirt), and comparing quotes without comparing GSM — a $2-cheaper quote on a 160gsm blank isn’t cheaper, it’s just lighter.
